Merger Conversation Update

In November 2018, both DBAs (CNY, Nov. 8 and WPA Nov. 28), after reviewing the merger exploration feedback offered in the October regional meetings and the process overall, voted unanimously to recommend the merger of our districts. If I could summarize simply the “why?” for merger, it is that both boards felt a merged district would be in a greater position of strength and for effectiveness in mission. As a result of the merger recommendation, a reconvened conference will be held in both districts for the purpose of voting on merger (The Discipline1115). WPA will hold its reconvened conference on February 16th, from 10am – Noon, at Hyde Wesleyan Church. CNY will hold its conference on February 23rd, from 10am – Noon, at Victory Highway Wesleyan Church. Churches do not need to elect new delegates for the reconvened conference, as delegates and/or alternates elected for the June 2018 District Conference are recalled to again represent their church. We will confirm with each pastor/church their delegate list (addresses) prior to mailing the conference packet. As a point of clarification, The Discipline does not make provision for absentee ballots for a district conference. The conference will begin with worship, followed by a celebration of 2018-19 local church ministry and a time of prayer. A merger recommendation overview will then be provided and time given for Q&A. We will conclude with the merger vote and a closing time of worship. A joint DBA meeting will be held on January 24th in Williamsport PA. The purpose of this meeting is to finalize the merger proposal and recommendation (action item) and for an extended time of prayer together. A packet of information containing this proposal and recommendation, along with conference details/logistics, will be mailed to pastors and delegates on January 30th.  Please take time in advance to prayerfully review the material with your delegates and church leaders. Feel free to contact me or members of the DBA with any questions you may have in advance of the conference.

A great deal of work and prayer has been invested in the merger exploration to get us to this point. I would like to thank both DBAs and the sub-committee members for the time and expertise they’ve poured into the exploration. I also want to thank the pastors and both district families for the intercession and engagement throughout the process. There is no doubt there is much work yet to do before we gather in February. Yet, the DBAs recommend merger with a clear sense of the Lord’s leading thus far and with confidence in His faithfulness to lead us forward.
